Chris Smalling has said that he is ready for the challenge to face Lionel Messi ahead of Manchester United’s match against Barcelona.

The England centre back will face Lionel Messi and company at Old Trafford tonight but the United defender believes he can take on the five time Ballon d’Or winner and stop him.

“It’s something to relish I think,” said the United centre-back. “This season, we have been lucky enough to face Ronaldo, (Kylian) Mbappe and they are all challenges that I definitely relish and I think players at this club relish. I say bring it on.”

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer echoed Smalling’s sentiment, saying: “What kind of plan can you have to stop one of the best players in the world? As Chris says, we are looking forward to it, we relish the opportunity but this season, we have played against Juventus with Ronaldo, PSG with Mbappe, we’ve had Chelsea and (Eden) Hazard.”

Manchester United have already faced PSG this season and staged an amazing comeback with a second team against everybody’s expectations. They now take on Barcelona in the quarter finals of the tournament and will look to win the first leg at Old Trafford.
