According to reports, Everton are keen to sign Manchester United defender Chris Smalling next summer. Smalling’s current deal with Manchester United expires next summer although Manchester United have the option to extend his contract by another 12 months.

Smalling has already had discussions with Manchester United over a new deal but he wants wages higher than his current £90,000 a week.

Everton boss Marco Silva is keeping close tabs on the 28-year old center-back. A Manchester United source has confirmed that Everton have shown a great deal of interest in Smalling. The source said, “Chris has been looked at by a number of clubs, but Everton have shown a lot of interest. He is out of contract next summer and there’s been chats over extending it, but nothing has been finalised as of yet.

There needs to be some protection of the investment in him, so don’t be surprised if the new year deal comes in. If that doesn’t happen then he will walk away at the end of the season. He can also talk to European clubs in January, we’re aware of that.”

Chris Smalling joined Manchester United from Fulham in 2010. He has since made 303 appearances for the club, scoring 18 goals and providing 4 assists. This season, Smalling has been in fine form for the Red Devils. He has made 14 appearances across all competitions, scoring a goal against Watford in September.

Given his new-found form, Manchester United will be keen on keeping Smalling.
