Manchester United backed to return for Premier League in near future

The Red Devils were heavily linked with a move for him this summer

Jose Mourinho prioritized bolstering his defensive options during the summer as he was not happy with the defensive setup last season, despite being the second best defensive team in the Premier League and keeping the most clean sheets.

The manager was keen to sign a top class centre-back during the transfer window. Manchester United were heavily linked many defenders and one of them was Harry Maguire.

The England International joined Leicester City from Hull City on a five-year contract for an initial £12 million fee, potentially rising to £17 million with add-ons last summer.

The 25 year featured regularly for the Foxes last term and was very impressive, scoring two goals and assisted 6 in 46 appearances. He featured in all the 38 Premier League matches and won the club’s player of the year award.

The centre-back has been one of the standout performers in England’s march to the semi-finals of the World Cup in Russia but were beaten by Croatia.

But the Red Devils failed to sign anyone before the transfer deadline, with teenage right-back Diogo Dalot being the only defensive signing. They have struggled defensively so far this season, conceding 7 goals and keeping only 1 clean sheet.

Though Maguire has signed a new contract with the club, extending it until the summer of 2023. But former Leicester star Emile Heskey believes Manchester United will be back for him in near future.

He told Express Sport: “Having a contract never put anyone off.

“I’m guessing they’ll just be looking at their transfer kitty and the names they want.

“They’ll go again, but having signed a new contract I can see Maguire is very happy, Leicester are happy and he’s at a good club.”

“I’m guessing it would be fairly hard to continue playing when you’ve got the likes of Manchester United so adamant that they want you,” added the ex-England international.

“But you could see how professional he was.

“It never troubled his game. He went out there and performed – it was great to see.

“Now he’s signed he can focus fully on putting in performances for Leicester and enjoying his football.”
