Manchester United have put up a lucrative contract to Matthijs de Ligt in a bid to lure the player to the club.

Barcelona looked to have secured the service of the Dutch defender as the player reportedly gave his nod to the move. A deal in the range of £62m was supposed to take place as the 19 year old was expected to join his teammate Frenkie de Jong at the Nou Camp.

But in a last ditch attempt, United have reportedly made a £12 m offer to the player to scupper Barcelona’s chances of making the deal happen. De Ligt’s brilliant performance throughout this season forced United to enter the competition and the Red Devils are ready to splash the big bucks for him.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has targeted young players rather than experienced names and the young defender suits the profile perfectly. Neither Phil Jones nor Chris Smalling managed to provide assurance except Victor Lindelof who stood in the United backline like a one man army.

The need for a solid partner for Lindelof has been felt and United are ready to flex their financial muscles in the summer as they are eyeing a team rebuilding process.
