Ten Hag responds to Ajax boss criticism for Antony transfer fee

Ten Hag admits his club have no other choice on Antony’s transfer.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag believes the club had to spend huge amounts of money to keep up with their rivals. The club recently signed Ajax winger Antony for over £80m.

Ajax manager Alfred Schreuder criticised the exorbitant fee spent on Antony, but ten Hag admits his club have no other choice.

“I’ve said all the top clubs in the Premier League spent a lot of money in the summer. That is how the market developed in this window. I can do nothing for it. No one can do anything for it, it’s just a market. So we have to accept that.”

On if his squad has strengthened this summer, ten Hag said: “I think we’ve strengthened the squad, clear. As a manager you want always more.

“What I demand from my players, I have to show it myself as well. You want to always maximise. But at a certain point you have also to be satisfied with what is there and it’s also then about development.

“Development of the team, development of the individuals to get this team stronger, to get the team more consistency. To bring more quality and that is what we have to work for now: me, together with my coaches and of course togetherness with the team.”

Edinson Cavani left Old Trafford earlier this summer.

The veteran forward left Man United this summer after two seasons with the Red Devils.

He scored 17 goals in his debut season for the club that eventually earned him a contract extension.

He has now signed a two-year contract with Spanish giants Valencia and Cavani explains the reason behind his move.

“We’re here because, right from the start, the club wanted me,” he said.

“It’s not just about where you want to go; it’s also down to the club having an interest in you. It’s taken many days going back and forth, and there was always a desire shown for me to be here. What motivated me the most was that I know that Valencia CF are a big club.

“This is a beautiful challenge for me, so I’m here because I feel that there is a passion for football which fulfils us as players when it’s time to go out onto the pitch. There have been some very long days, as we were a little anxious to know what was going to happen, waiting for this moment to arrive. We know what Valencia CF represent and this excites us and motivates us for this new challenge.

“I’m very happy to be part of the history of this club, and I hope that together we can do wonderful things.”

Manchester United have agreed on a deal to sign Antony.

The club had agreed an £84million deal to sign the Brazilian winger and is United’s fifth signing of the summer.

Club legend Rio Ferdinand explains how this signing would help one specific player.

“What does Antony bring? He brings his trickery, he brings that unpredictable Brazilian element, a fantastic technical football player, plays on the right-hand side of the front three, cutting in on his left foot – he’s left-footed predominantly,” Ferdinand told his FIVE YouTube channel.

“He’s a man who’s a box full of tricks. He’s someone who wants to beat people but he has got an eye for a pass as well, he can create, he can slide balls through for the attacking players and people who make good runs off of him.

He [Antony] also wants people running off him and I think he’s better when he’s playing short passes and moving and running and that Ajax way.

“If Erik ten Hag can get the attacking formula working like that it’ll really suit him and I think it’ll suit someone like Sancho as well. He likes that short pass and movement game, he may be a little bit more explosive but he definitely brings that excitement factor that Old Trafford like in their wingers.”

Lisandro Martinez still expected to be a flop

Lisandro Martinez won two MOTM awards for his performance.

The 24-year-old defender has recorded 61 touches, 48 passes and seven clearances in his first four games of the season.

His height has continued to raise eyebrows and that could pose a problem to Man United.

Graeme Souness believes Martinez will eventually be found out in the next few games.

“I was watching the game at the weekend and they were putting Che Adams up against him, and the goalkeeper and other members of the Southampton team were loading it down that left-hand side, they were trying to stick it on his head,” Souness said.

“He’s vertically challenged and I was racking my mind to come up with anyone who has played in the Premier League, or indeed the first division, that size and been a success. I think he will get sorely tested and be found out going forward.”

Martinez would struggle against the likes Erling Haaland, Darwin Nunez and Aleksandar Mitrovic.

“Oh, deary me, it’ll be a mismatch,” Souness said. “He’s not particularly special at anything. I would say he’s feisty and aggressive.

“The other thing I don’t like about him: he goes to ground too readily. That is not a good sign for a defender. The clever ones stay on their feet and they’re reading it, they’re anticipating it. If you’re lunging all the time it means you’re not reading it.

Harry Maguire warned over his Man United captaincy

Harry Maguire will not be guaranteed a starting role.

The Man United captain was dropped for the second time in the club’s 1-0 win over Southampton this weekend.

Maguire continued with his captaincy armband under new manager Erik Ten Hag but that doesn’t guarantee him a start in the first XI.

Erik Ten Hag explains why Varane was picked ahead of Maguire in the last two games.

“I think that doesn’t mean when you are captain you are established to play always,” Ten Hag said. “Especially when you also have Varane in your squad.

“We have options. And you have already said… Varane… his stature is immense and in pre-season we took a decision to build him physically so he had a bit of a slow start.

“So he was fit in the first games but in the first period of pre-season he wasn’t always, so we are happy we built him in that way and you see when the team needed him he was really there and his profile, his stature and what he won already in the past shows he can really contribute to his team.”

Ten Hag said, “We plan with Ronaldo and we stick to the plan.”

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag admits he remains confident Cristiano Ronaldo will not be leaving. The Portuguese made headlines since the end of season 2021/22. He expressed his desire to leave the club if United miss out UCL qualification.

The summer window is going to end in three days and Ronaldo didn’t find any new club.

The 37-year-old featured as a second-half substitute in the victory at Southampton. He hasn’t made any start in Premier League this season.

Ten Hag said: “I cannot say that (Ronaldo will leave United).

“We plan with him and we stick to the plan and if there are good players available we will strike because we want to strengthen the squad always.

“So we will be alert until the last second of the window.”

Man United will play in Europa League this year and if Ronaldo stays, it will be the first time we will see him in Europa League.

Casemiro to wear number 18 for Manchester United

Manchester United new boy Casemiro has been confirmed as the next wearer of the number eighteen jersey

Only this summer, with Juan Mata’s departure, did eighteen become available, allowing Bruno Fernandes to convert to his preferred number eight.

United fans will be hoping that Casemiro has the same luck as Fernandes had when he originally joined the club.

When he signed in January 2020, the Portuguese turned around United’s fortunes.

His inventiveness was a welcome addition to a club that had relied on Andreas Pereira and Jesse Lingard in offensive midfield roles.

Casemiro’s present scenario is similar, with the five-time Champions League champion taking on a defensive midfield role previously occupied by Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic.

It remains to be seen if he can be as big of a spark as Fernandes was, but he surely has a better background.

Casemiro is also facing a handful of players who have both captained the club in competitive games.

Bruno Fernandes has worn the shirt as captain in Harry Maguire’s absence, while his predecessor, Ashley Young, served as club captain under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Jose Mourinho.

Young had the number for over a decade, but before him, there was the most renowned eighteen-year-old.

From 1996 through 2011, Paul Scholes, the ginger ninja, wore the number eighteen.

He wore it as a midfield conductor, off the front man, box to box, and as a midfield conductor. He looked great in it.

If Casemiro can replicate his achievements as a teenager, Old Trafford will be a very happy place.

Marco Asensio is valued at £25.3m by the Spanish giants.

Manchester United have been offered the chance to sign Marco Asensio from Real Madrid.

As per the reports of Jason Burt of The Telegraph, the Red Devils were given the option to pursue a deal for the Spaniard before they signed his teammate Casemiro.

The club are currently in advance talks to sign Ajax winger Antony in a deal worth €95m.

If they fail to sign Antony, United could revisit Madrid’s offer, given that they lack a left-footed attacker in their squad.

Asensio is valued at £25.3m by the Spanish giants, who are reluctant to see him leave on a free transfer at the end of the season when his contract expires.

Asensio may well be a cheaper alternative for Erik ten Hag’s current right-wing options.

The lower fee could even add save some funds and allow United to revive a deal for FC Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong.

Ten Hag has been insistent on adding weapons to his attacking arsenal this summer.

Harry Maguire is being used as a scapegoat claims pundit

Harry Maguire could lose the captain’s armband.

The Reds captain was dropped in United’s 2-1 in over Liverpool on Monday night.

Both Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane were impressive at the heart of defence.

The squad have been struggling in the defensive area for a while now and brought some reinforcements in the summer.

“Sometimes you look to your captain, if he’s having a real bad time when you’re looking for him then it can become harder because you look at a captain to lead by example,” Winterburn explained when speaking to Paddy Power.

“It appears to me that Harry Maguire is struggling a little and has been made a scapegoat. I’ve looked at certain goals where some pundits and people are putting Maguire into the fall.

“He’s an England international, he’s the captain of Manchester United, and the level of performance, as for most of them, needs to be considerably higher.

“The manager would make that decision whether he needs to change the captaincy, but the most important thing is his attitude, his dedication and the desire to win a game of football when you’re out on the pitch, it doesn’t take a captain to do that.”

Casemiro may debut in Premier League next weekend.

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is happy about the signing of Casemiro from Real Madrid.

The Red Devils signed the Brazilian defensive midfielder in a big money move last week.

Casemiro was at Old Trafford for an unveiling but did not participate in the game, when they took on Liverpool on Monday in the Premier League.

Asked about Casemiro’s qualities on and off the pitch, Ten Hag stated: “We need more leaders. When you want a winning team, you need more leaders.

“We have to bring it in every game, not only against Liverpool. We were talking about leadership and we were talking about leadership on the pitch but he [Casemiro] is one as well.

“He knows the game, he knows how to win. In his career he’s won so many trophies and that’s important to have in your team.

“Raphael Varane has it, so with him and Casemiro, [Cristiano] Ronaldo has it, you need some as a guidance for young players who didn’t achieve the trophies until now, but that’s what we want to achieve.”
