Sergio Romero wants to stay at Manchester United

The Argentine has been linked with a possible summer exit

Sergio Romero joined Manchester United from Sampdoria on a free transfer in 2015, signing a 3 year contract with an option to extend for a further year.

The 31 year old has won 1 FA Cup, 1 League cup and 1 Europa League since he joined the Red Devils. He played in the Europa League final last year and kept a clean sheet in 2-0 win against Ajax.

But the Argentine has acted as David De Gea’s understudy at Old Trafford and has just made 38 appearances for the club, just 7 of them coming in the Premier League since he moved to England. He has been the first choice goalkeeper in cup competitions but has found first team opportunities in the Premier League and Champions League hard to come by.

He signed a contract extension last summer that will keep him at the club until 2022 but has been linked with a possible exit this summer.

But Romero has confirmed that he intends to stay at the club beyond this summer as he wants to reiterate his commitment to Jose Mourinho.

“I’m staying at Manchester United for now. [United manager] Mourinho worked hard for my renewal until 2022. I can’t leave him now,” Romero explained to TyC Sports as quoted by Goal on Saturday.

“If United wants to sell me, if they have an offer that it’s useful for the club, they will sell me. But I don’t think that would happen”.

The Argentine goalkeeper is in the process of recovering from a knee injury and expressed his disappointment on missing the World Cup after he was selected in the squad by Jorge Sampaoli.

“I spoke with Jorge, I explained the situation and recovery time. I told him that I didn’t have anything broken. I assured him that I would be available in 10 days,” he added.

“Sampaoli and the coaching staff’s time frame is different. They wanted someone who could be there every day and I was taken off the list in four hours.

“My career with the national team hasn’t finished. I’m working towards my return”.
