Ruben Amorim maintained that he will not be able to immediately contribute at Manchester United despite Sporting Lisbon’s spectacular 4-1 Champions League thumping of Manchester City. After accepting United’s offer to succeed Erik ten Hag, Sporting boss Amorim will formally take over the struggling Premier League team on November 11.
As Sporting revealed injury-plagued City’s defensive vulnerabilities, the 39-year-old, regarded as one of Europe’s most brilliant young managerial minds, offered a tantalizing peak of his abilities. Viktor Gyokeres gave Sporting the lead before halftime, Maximiliano Araujo scored the second goal after the interval, and Gyokeres’ penalty completed their amazing comeback with two goals.
Ruben Amorim admits Manchester United cannot play like Sporting
The 39-year-old won 4-1 over Pep Guardiola’s team in Lisbon on Tuesday, but he doesn’t think it will matter when he formally takes over as Manchester United’s head coach on Monday, November 11. He said, “What I can tell you is that this doesn’t mean anything in particular – don’t take anything from this,” following the Lisbon game. We are unable to change the fact. Manchester United is unable to play the way we do, so we will need to change.
The Portuguese coach is eager to get going with his new team, though, saying, “It will be fun, very fun, and I’m ready for the challenge.” Amorim will play his final match as Sporting’s manager on Sunday against Braga, the team he formerly coached. On November 24, he will play his debut game as United’s manager at Portman Road against Ipswich Town.
