Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has publicly challenged young defender Patrick Dorgu to remain calmer on the pitch after expressing concern over the player’s growing nerves.

Dorgu joined United from Lecce in January for a reported £25 million fee and has quickly been thrown into the Premier League spotlight.
The 21-year-old has already made 32 appearances across all competitions, including 23 league games since his arrival.
This season, he has featured in 11 of United’s 12 Premier League fixtures, most recently during the disappointing 1-0 loss to 10-man Everton at Old Trafford.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s clash with Crystal Palace, Amorim suggested that the pressure of representing Manchester United may be affecting Dorgu’s confidence and decision-making.
“When I watch Patrick with the national team, he plays with freedom,” Amorim said, referencing the defender’s composed goal against Scotland while representing Denmark during the November break.
“The decisions he made under pressure were completely different from what we’re seeing here.
He needs to play the game calmer. You can feel the anxiety every time Patrick touches the ball.”
Despite the concerns, Amorim is not expected to move the full-back out of the squad or consider a transfer.
The club recognises his lack of experience at the elite level and believes inconsistency is part of his development. This season is only Dorgu’s third in top-flight football after breaking through at Lecce last year.
With United already planning a midfield rebuild in the summer of 2026, major defensive changes are unlikely during the upcoming winter window. For now, the focus remains on helping Dorgu adapt and grow into his role.
United will hope the message serves as motivation rather than pressure as the team prepares for another crucial Premier League test this weekend.
