When Manchester United lost the FA Cup, Ruben Amorim retaliated against Wayne Rooney by saying that he was not naive to be the club’s head coach at forty. After Fulham eliminated the cup holders on penalties, Rooney, United’s all-time top scorer, called Amorim naive for stating that the team’s long-term objective is to win the Premier League.
“That is the objective,” the Portuguese remarked in response to Rooney’s remarks. It would be stupid to believe that we will win this season or be the top contender the following one. Thus, I am aware that everyone is currently well-informed. I am aware of that, and it’s very simple—when I concluded my career, I was a pundit. I’m sure it’s quite simple.
The Premier League victory is our aim. Perhaps I don’t have it. Even though we are in a challenging time, we want to perform better, and our objective as a club and board is to win the Premier League again, just like we did in the past with all of our club’s great glories and legends. And the reason I am here, at forty, coaching Manchester United, is because I am not naive.
Amorim hits back at Wayne Rooney’s comments
As a BBC commentator, Rooney stated, “I think it’s a little naive to say they’re looking to win the Premier League because from where they are now, they’re a long way off that.”. Calvin Bassey’s first goal was leveled by Bruno Fernandes’s second-half goal shortly before halftime, but Bernd Leno saved the penalty kicks of Victor Lindelöf and Joshua Zirkzee, sending Fulham through.
Amorim stood up for André Onana, who slowed down a goal kick in the 78th minute and then did the same later, instead of launching an attack to find a winner in normal time. Before mentioning the midweek loss to Ipswich, where Patrick Dorgu was sent off before halftime, Amorim remarked, “It is also frustration for André; he is trying to read the team.”
