Former Manchester United midfielder Gordon Strachan has declared that Andre Onana’s career at the club is over, following the goalkeeper’s loan move to Trabzonspor.
Former Star Insists Onana Has Played His Last Game for United
Onana, who joined United for £47 million in 2023, failed to secure his position after a series of high-profile errors across two seasons.
Manager Ruben Amorim eventually dropped the Cameroonian international, leaving him out of the team’s first three Premier League matches this campaign before sanctioning his season-long loan to the Turkish side.
Strachan expressed strong doubts about any potential comeback for the 29-year-old.
“I think Andre Onana has played his last game for Manchester United,” the Scot told Esports News.
He criticized Onana’s lack of presence and suggested the goalkeeper never seemed settled.
“A big problem for me is that I’m not sure Onana really wanted to be at Old Trafford. He looked like he’d rather be somewhere else,” Strachan added.
United moved quickly to replace Onana, signing Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp for £18.1 million on the summer deadline day.
The 23-year-old has already made a positive impression, reportedly earning the admiration of legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson and solidifying his role as Amorim’s first choice.
While Trabzonspor do not have an option to make Onana’s transfer permanent, meaning he is scheduled to return to Old Trafford next summer, the club appears ready to move on.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the outlook, stating that United are “super happy” with Lammens and will likely seek a permanent solution for Onana in the upcoming summer transfer window.
With Onana under contract until 2028 but seemingly without a future at the club, a permanent departure now looks inevitable as United place their faith in their new, younger goalkeeper.
