Erik ten Hag says Cristiano Ronaldo has to accept the consequences and potential backlash for the “bad behaviour”

Wednesday’s 2-0 win against Tottenham was the Dutchman’s greatest all-around performance, but the post-match discussion has been dominated by the 37-year-early old’s exit.

Ronaldo exited the tunnel before the clock hit 90 minutes and made a quick exit from Old Trafford, prompting Ten Hag to bench the attacker for Saturday’s encounter against Chelsea.

“sometimes the heat of the moment gets the best of us” and the United boss confirmed at his pre-match press conference that the Portuguese refused to come on as a substitute.

“It is a difficult decision, it’s clear,” Ten Hag said. “But I think there has to be consequences for behaviour or when it’s bad behaviour and it’s the second time, then you can’t let it go because otherwise it is going to be miserable for the future.

Ronaldo might return to play when United face Sheriff Tiraspol in the Europa League on Thursday, when the crowd is expected to be less enthusiastic than normal.

The 37-year-old is adored by Old Trafford fans for his brilliant first tenure at the club, but his recent antics are unlikely to have gone down well.
