Former England striker Darren Bent has urged Manchester United to drop Marcus Rashford for Sunday’s Manchester derby and hand Benjamin Šeško a first Premier League start of the season.
“I’d Like to See Šeško Play” – Bent Urges Carrick to Drop Rashford for Derby
Speaking on talkSPORT, Bent argued that Šeško’s goal-scoring form and physical presence make him the ideal choice to lead the line against Manchester City at Old Trafford.
Rashford has started two of United’s three league games but has yet to score or assist.
He impressed at Everton but was rested for the Champions League win over Sabah, where Šeško and Matheus Cunha both found the net.
Bent, a former centre-forward, said: “Being a former centre-forward, I would like to see Šeško play in his position.”
He suggested a front three of Bryan Mbeumo, Šeško, and Cunha from the left, leaving Rashford on the bench.
Šeško, 23, has scored in each of his last two appearances, offering a 6ft 5in focal point United have lacked. Manager Michael Carrick acknowledged the striker’s unique qualities:
“There’s not many around that give you what Ben does in terms of his physique, physicality, and speed to run in behind.”
Bent admitted leaving Rashford out may feel unfair, as the England international hasn’t had a consistent run of starts.
“You’re only going to get the best of Rashford when he’s playing, playing, playing,” he said.
However, with Mbeumo, Cunha, and Šeško all scoring, Bent called it a “nice problem” for Carrick.
Sunday’s derby sees City aiming to open a 12-point gap over United. Carrick must decide whether to reward Šeško’s form or give Rashford the chance to shine on the big stage.
