Dimitar Berbatov has backed duo to stay at Manchester United

Both of their futures has been called into question

Paul Pogba returned to Manchester United in the summer of 2016, on a five-year contract for a then-record for highest football transfer fee at £89.3 million. He left the club to join Juventus in 2012 for more game time, where he established himself as one of the best midfielders in the world.

The France International started off the last season off positively but was benched following a few poor performances. His form was often questioned last season and was even criticized by Jose Mourinho himself.

Though the 25 year old responded with brilliant performances towards the end of the season and won the United’s Player of the month for April. He ended the season with 6 goals and 11 assists in all competitions.

There was heavy speculations that the midfielder’s relation with Jose Mourinho is not good and they weren’t even in speaking terms. As a result he was heavily linked with a move to Barcelona during the transfer window but a move never materialised.

Reports of a breakdown in the working relationship between two big personalities refuse to go away, despite claims from Mourinho that there is nothing to discuss.

The Frenchman has further fuelled the speculation surrounding his future with another non-committal answer to questions regarding a possible move elsewhere.

However, former United forward Dimitar Berbatov acknowledged that there may be friction between the pair but believes both of them will stay at the club.

He told the Mirror: “Neither of them should go, it’s all just speculation and it’s not helping. The focus needs to change to football there.

“At a big club there are always going to be issues and you will always have players with big egos who want to win and sometimes this can create friction between the players or with the manager but it’s normal in football clubs especially a big successful club.

“When you are a grown up man you know how to deal with a situation like this, but if those outside the club are constantly talking about it and coming up with stories then it’s not helping anyone.

“I’m far away from the team so I’m just reading what everyone else is reading, I don’t have the inside word but even if there is something going on then the people involved should know how to deal with it and that’s the end of it.

“We are all humans, everyone makes mistakes, but the focus should be on the field.”
