Manchester lost 2-0 to Newcastle United last night.

The Red Devils went a goal down to the Magpies before the manager decided to sub off both Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez.

He opted to bring on Facundo Pellistri and Victor Lindelof and Newcastle United doubled their lead just after five minutes.

Gary Neville criticised the Dutchman for taking off both defenders before the final whistle.

Erik ten Hag has defended his decision to sub off both the defenders.

He said: “We were not happy. We played too high in the midfield and it was easy for the two centre-halves from Newcastle to defend our midfield players, so they had to play a bit deeper.

“Therefore we made the subs, to put Marcel [Sabitzer] as no.10 and Scott [McTominay] in a deeper role. Then we made changes to bring more energy. Then in the end we were losing so we decided to go with three at the back and play an extra offensive player.

“I was surprised we couldn’t match the determination, passion and desire of the opponent. If you want to win big games, you have to be mature and I didn’t see that today on the pitch.”
