Erik ten Hag’s big demands before signing Manchester United extension
Erik ten Hag has laid down three crucial demands as he considers a contract extension with Manchester United.
Following an end-of-season review, the Dutch manager is in discussions to extend his stay at Old Trafford, with the club eager to back him despite exploring other managerial options in recent weeks.
According to sources close to the negotiations, Ten Hag is adamant about maintaining his authority within the team.
His first demand is non-negotiable: Jadon Sancho will not return to the first team unless he issues a public apology.
This stems from last season’s fallout, where Sancho publicly accused Ten Hag of dishonesty, leading to his loan to Borussia Dortmund.
The expectation is that Sancho will be offloaded this summer unless he reconciles with the manager.
Ten Hag’s second demand involves pushing back against technical director Jason Wilcox’s influence over the team’s playing style.
Despite showing some flexibility, such as agreeing to use Bruno Fernandes in a false nine role during the FA Cup final victory over Manchester City, Ten Hag insists on retaining full control over tactical decisions. He seeks assurances that his vision for the team will not be compromised by external pressures.
Lastly, Ten Hag wants the club to secure a new deal for forwards coach Benni McCarthy. The South African’s contract is set to expire soon, and Ten Hag values McCarthy’s contributions to the coaching staff.
McCarthy himself has expressed a strong desire to remain at United, hoping to continue his coaching career in Europe.
United are reportedly preparing to offer Ten Hag a contract extension until 2027, extending his current deal by two years.
As talks progress, the club will need to meet these demands to ensure Ten Hag’s continued leadership and vision at Old Trafford.
