Harry Maguire will lose the Man United armband next season.

The England defender will lose his captaincy ahead of the new season and De Gea will reportedly be handed the captain’s armband.

But Danny Murphy believes Ten Hag should wait until the right candidate for the captaincy role arrives.

“I don’t think it should be set in stone,” Murphy told talkSPORT when asked about the captaincy rumour. “But I think on this particular occasion, this is a very important decision from United moving forward and not one that should be taken lightly.

“I certainly don’t think he [Ten Hag] should be leaving that decision to the players. I think what you could do is leave it as it is and give himself a bit of time to make the right decision. My feeling is sometimes the best thing to do for a new manager is to give the captaincy to a player he knows and trusts – [someone] who he brings in.”

Murphy went on to say: “If you bring in a leader, if you bring in someone and then you go, ‘You’re the captain’, you’re kind of together then.”
