Erik ten Hag should have been clear with Ronaldo about his role.

The Portuguese superstar has found himself on the bench in the 2022/23 season and decided to remove him from the game in the Chelsea draw last weekend.

He was told to train alone for a few days but is now back with the full squad and could start the game against Sheriff on Thursday in the Europa League.

Manager Erik ten Hag has faced a lot of criticism on how he handled the situation but many fans have also welcomed his strong stance on the matter.

Liverpool legend Graeme Souness believes the manager should have been clear with the veteran’s role at the start of the season.

“In five years time, Ten Hag will be away from United, and no one will talk about him at Man United,” said Souness. “I would have ironed it out with Ronaldo on day 1. I personally would use him very differently, I still think he’s got something to offer.

“In five years time, no one will remember Ten Hag. Ronaldo will be remembered as arguably the greatest player who has ever kicked a football.”
