Manchester United Considering Gareth Southgate For Managerial Post

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United has not made any official approach to former England manager Gareth Southgate, despite widespread rumors linking him to the Old Trafford job.

Fabrizio Romano: Man Utd Have Not Made Southgate Approach

The clarification comes amid increasing pressure on current manager Ruben Amorim, following a poor start to the 2025/26 Premier League season that has seen the team win only two of its first six matches and sit 14th in the table.

In a recent update, Fabrizio Romano stated that despite his “very good personal connection with people at INEOS,” no concrete negotiations have taken place between Southgate and the club.

“My understanding, from Manchester United sources, is that they are playing down all the reports,” Romano said on his YouTube channel.

“I’m not aware of any meeting. I’m not aware of any direct contact. I’m not aware of any negotiation”.

The speculation about a managerial change has been fueled by the team’s inconsistent form. The pressure intensified after a 3-1 defeat to Brentford, a match where United were two goals down within the first 20 minutes.

This disappointing run means Amorim has yet to secure back-to-back league victories since taking charge in November 2024, accumulating only 33 points from his 34 league games in charge.

Complicating any potential move is Southgate’s own stated intention to take a break from management.

After leaving his role with England following the Euro 2024 final, he announced, “I won’t coach in the next year for sure, I’m certain of that. I need to give myself time to make good decisions”.

His only club management experience to date was with Middlesbrough from 2006 to 2009.

For now, Ruben Amorim remains in charge, with the team next facing Sunderland at Old Trafford. The situation remains fluid, but any change in the dugout appears to be a matter for the future, not the present.
