Facundo Pellistri completes £6.8m move from Manchester United to Panathinaikos

Facundo Pellistri, once hailed as one of Manchester United’s most promising young talents, has embarked on a new chapter in his career, signing a four-year contract with Greek giants Panathinaikos.

The transfer, worth £6.8 million, marks the end of the Uruguayan winger’s time at Old Trafford.

Pellistri joined Manchester United from Uruguayan club Penarol in 2020, arriving with high expectations. However, despite showing glimpses of his potential, the 22-year-old struggled to cement a regular spot in United’s first team.

Over four years, Pellistri made 25 appearances for the Red Devils, with his performances often coming in cup competitions or off the bench in league fixtures.

Last season, Pellistri spent the latter half on loan at LaLiga side Granada, where he began to showcase the talent that initially caught United’s eye.

In his short stint in Spain, he contributed directly to four goals, including a standout performance against Barcelona, where he scored once and assisted another in a thrilling 3-3 draw.

Pellistri’s performances in La Liga, coupled with his strong showing for Uruguay at the 2024 Copa America where he played a key role in securing a third-place finish caught the attention of Panathinaikos.

The Greek club, eager to bolster their attacking options, saw in Pellistri a player with untapped potential ready to be unleashed.

The move to Panathinaikos offers Pellistri a fresh start and the opportunity to become a key player in a team competing for domestic titles and European football.

Manchester United, recognizing the possibility of Pellistri flourishing in Greece, have smartly negotiated a significant sell-on clause believed to be 45% and included a buy-back option valid for three years.

As Erik ten Hag continues to reshape his United squad, Pellistri’s departure is one of many, yet it stands out as a move that could prove mutually beneficial.

For the young winger, it’s a chance to reignite his career and fulfill the promise that once made him a sought-after prospect in European football.
