Former Manchester United player believes the club needs a striker

Jose Mourinho prioritized signing a new centre-back

Manchester United are looking to bolster their squad in the transfer window after an underwhelming campaign last season, not winning a single silverware. They finished second in the Premier League, 19 points behind Manchester City.

The Red Devils are expected to be busy in the summer transfer window and they have already completed three signings, teenage full-back Diogo Dalot has signed from Porto, while a £52.5 million fee has been agreed with Shakhtar Donetsk for Brazil international Fred and Lee Grant from Stoke City.

Despite having the most clean sheets and the second best defensive record in the Premier League last term, Jose Mourinho was not happy as he had to rely on auxiliary full-backs and failed to settle on a consistent central defensive axis due to injuries and inconsistency.

The manager prioritized signing a new centre-back and the club have heavily linked with a move for Harry Maguire, Toby Alderweireld, Yeery Mina and Jerome Boateng. However, they are yet to sign anyone with transfer deadline approaching.

Former United midfielder Paul Ince believes the club should have been looking for a striker not a centre-half.

He told BBC Sport on what United need: “Last season, from a footballing point of view, United weren’t great.

“Their fans were moaning that they did not attack enough and although I think Mourinho has tried to address that, they really need to hit the ground running this time.

“The signs are not great, though. Everything should be geared towards the first game of the season but instead it is all about Mourinho.

“There are some positives, and I am expecting a big season from Paul Pogba after his World Cup, but I definitely think they need another striker as back-up to Romelu Lukaku – someone in a similar mould to the Belgian.”
