Gareth Southgate reveals what Jose Mourinho thinks of Marcus Rashford

The Striker has struggled to hold down a regular place under the Portuguese

Marcus Rashford burst on to the scene for Manchester United back in 2016 as he marked his debut for the club by scoring two goals against Midtjylland in the second leg of the Europa League. He even scored two goals against Arsenal in his Premier League debut.

Since then he has been ever present for the Premier League giants and has established himself as one of most talented youngsters in the world.

Since Jose Mourinho took over the charge of Red Devils in 2016, The 20 year old has featured in 105 of the club’s 121 competitive games, as both a starter and a substitute, more than any other player.

The England International was in good form for the club last season but found his first team opportunities to be somewhat restricted under the Portuguese, starting only 16 games in the Premier League. Since the arrival of Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal during the January transfer window, he has been mostly used as a substitute.

The player has featured in 3 of the 4 Premier League fixtures so far this season, starting in only 1 of them against Leicester City. He is yet to find the net or make an assist and was shown a direct red card against Burnley, will be missing the next 3 domestic fixtures.

Former Chelsea manager is considered to be a hindrance in his development by some, as he has dipped in and out of the starting XI at Old Trafford, struggling to hold down a consistent first-team place.

The Englishman has also been urged by few to leave the club in order to fulfill his potential as he would struggle to displace Romelu Lukaku.

England Manager Gareth Southgate has assured that Mourinho is a big fan of Rashford and is rated very highly by him.

“Jose thinks the world of Marcus,” he said as quoted by Goal. “He’s a huge admirer of him, but he has got his job to do. There is huge competition for places at his club so you can understand that.

“I understand the difficulties that club managers have. They have to try and win matches. They have to rotate their squads.

“It’s not my business to interfere with club managers. They have a difficult job to do and they have big squads at the top six, with huge competition for places.”

“We really wanted to make Marcus feel important over this period,” Southgate added.

“It was important especially to get him in the penalty box and remembering the areas he needs to be scoring goals from.

“His confidence will be boosted I’m sure, with two goals against top-quality opposition.”
