Ruben Amorim has been pushed by Gary Neville to start being consistent with his team selections following Manchester United’s 3-2 loss to Nottingham Forest on Saturday. With Forest winning their first game at Old Trafford in 30 years, United had lost back-to-back games for the first time since Amorim took over as manager from Erik ten Hag. Nikola Milenkovic’s header from a corner placed Forest ahead against United after just two minutes.
After Morgan Gibbs-White gave Forest the lead again with a low shot that Andre Onana should have stopped, Rasmus Hojlund equalized for United with a strike from close range. Following Wednesday night’s 2-0 loss to Arsenal, Amorim made four changes to his starting lineup. During the match, he made five replacements, including captain Bruno Fernandes, as United attempted to tie the score.
Neville feels that Enzo Maresca has set a high standard by having two distinct starting lineups for Chelsea’s Premier League and Conference League campaigns, and that Amorim needs to decide on a core group of players for his new-look system.
Gary Neville tells Ruben Amorim, “Maresca is doing it.”
Choose an eleven that you believe to be the greatest. I believe I said this with Ten Hag for over a year. I believed that, as we all decided prior to the game, the eleven, excluding Luke Shaw, was as near to United’s strongest eleven as possible. I’m not advocating against substituting, but I would advise you to give that eleven some faith and trust.
Maresca is currently doing it at Chelsea; he plays a new eleven in the middle of the week after playing an eleven on a Saturday or Sunday. This is a stable situation; this is what we’re going to do, this is how we’re going to play, and this is a concept that I support, he’s telling the players.
