Gary Neville explains why Paul Pogba is criticized at Manchester United

The midfielder has been very impressive for France in the World Cup

Paul Pogba returned to Manchester United in the summer of 2016, on a five-year contract for a then-record for highest football transfer fee at £89.3 million. He left the club to join Juventus in 2012 for more game time, where he established himself as one of the best midfielders in the world.

The France International was pivotal for the team during his first season with the Red Devils and helped the club to win the League cup and their first ever Europa League title.

The 25 year old started the last season off positively but was benched following a few poor performances. His form was often questioned last season and was even criticized by Jose Mourinho himself.

Though the Frenchman responded with brilliant performances towards the end of the season and won the United’s Player of the month for April. He ended the season with 6 goals and 11 assists in all competitions but the English side finished second in the league, 19 points behind Manchester City.

He has been one of the stand out players not only for his nation France but also in the tournament. He has received praises for his impressive displays and is hailed as one of the driving forces of the team.

The midfielder has helped the team to reach the finals and will face Croatia on Sunday.

United Legend Gary Neville explains why Pogba is criticized at Manchester United.

“At times when you watch him for United, it looks effortless – it looks so easy for him. Like he can do anything he wants”, he told the United We Stand podcast.

“Basically the issue is at United: if a team is not successful or not doing well and you’re the most expensive player, and you also give it a bit like he does, you’re going to get some stick. Simple as that.”

“So if David Beckham is not playing well but he’s doing TV adverts and the team aren’t winning, then he’s going to get some stick. Those type of players – Wayne Rooney was the same, Paul Gascoigne was the same – it was probably the same for George Best 30 years ago.”

“It wouldn’t have all been a bed of roses. Everyone just remembers the good. It’s always been the same. If you’re the big player, big name, the profile, the poster boy, then you’re going to get some stick if the team aren’t winning and that’s just life.”
