Former Manchester United great Rio Ferdinand has stated that Harry Maguire shouldn’t be compared to Virgil van Dijk following his move to Manchester United. The 26-year-old joined the Red Devils in a world-record £80m deal, becoming the most expensive defender of all time.

However, the move hasn’t gone down well with a bunch of pundits and fans, who have slammed United for splashing that gigantic amount of cash for the defender. Apparently, Maguire is still viewed unworthy of the price tag and incessantly compared to Liverpool center-back van Dijk.

And, the comparisons are unfair on the Englishman’s part, according to Ferdinand.

“Inevitably he is going to be judged against someone like Virgil van Dijk because he has gone for more money,” He told Express Sport.

“He’ll be judged against what he’s done and they’ve now won the Champions League.”

“But I think it’s an unfair comparison because what Virgil came in to was a team that was closer to the top, closer to winning and a lot of the jigsaw was already pieced together.”

Maguire silenced a bunch of his critics with a man-of-the-match display against Chelsea as United cruised to a thumping 4-0 victory on the opening day of the Premier League.

The Red Devils are set to undergo yet another tough test as they travel to Molineux to face Wolverhampton.
