How Manchester United Missed Out On Signing This €100m Defender For Nothing

Highly promising Bundesliga defender, Dayot Upamecano who is drawing constant links to Manchester United was supposed to sign with the Old Trafford side back when he was 16 years old but the move ended up falling through due to the club’s negligence towards the player.

The centre-back’s agent, Thierry Martinez revealed to the press, “An intermediary met with us, but between the project, she presented us and what was actually going to happen. A flat was promised, but that changed to a host family with only six return trips for his parents.”

“When you uproot a player at such a young age, that isn’t enough. I wanted Dayot to have a stable emotional balance off the pitch.”

A deal to sign him from Valenciennes was almost done when the Red Devils offered to pay for just 6 trips for the teenager’s relatives to come visit him in Manchester. Martinez simply could not accept the way United went back on their promises and decided to take up the offer from Red Bull Salzburg instead.

Now, Upamecano is has made 20 appearances for sister club, RB Leipzig this season before going down to a knee injury. He is touted to be Bundesliga’s next big defensive figure, based off of the sheer talent he possesses on the field.

And now, United are tied in a foot race to sign him for as much as £88m due to his release clause when they could have had him for almost nothing 4 years back.
