Howard Webb: I made a mistake, then prayed for Ronaldo to miss the penalty

The famous English referee, Howard Webb, admitted a wrong decision that he was aware of a few seconds after he made it.

It is about a penalty call in the match between Manchester United and Tottenham in 2009. At the end of the season, then, for the Premier League title, United fought Liverpool.

After the first half, Tottenham had a 2-0 lead with goals from Bent and Modric. After ten minutes of play in the second half, Webb pointed to the white spot after a foul by goalkeeper Gomez on Carrick.

“I saw Carrick come to the ball first and then the goalkeeper touched it. It was easy to play a penalty. I expected the usual protest from the players, but I did not expect such astonishment from Gomez. Within seconds, I realized I was wrong. I did not change my mind. I didn’t know where I had gone wrong, but I knew something was wrong. “I prayed for Ronaldo to miss the penalty.”

Ronaldo scored the penalty, to make the score 2-1 to Tottenham, and then gave four more goals to win 5-2.
