Ian Wright has stated that Kobbie Mainoo’s outstanding performances for Manchester United have left former manager Ruben Amorim “embarrassed.”
Ian Wright Lauds Mainoo After Man Utd Display
The Arsenal legend made the strong comments following United’s 2-0 victory over Tottenham.
Mainoo, 20, delivered another influential display in midfield, continuing his impressive run since Michael Carrick took charge.
This marks a dramatic turnaround for the academy graduate, who was a peripheral figure under Amorim.
Before the Portuguese coach’s dismissal on January 5, Mainoo had not started a single Premier League game this season.
Wright expressed bewilderment at Amorim’s previous treatment of the player.
“Everybody was confused with what was happening under Ruben Amorim,” Wright told Premier League Productions.
He emphasized that Mainoo’s seamless integration into a struggling team highlights his obvious quality.
The pundit did not mince words about the situation’s implication for the former boss.
“I think it’s very embarrassing for Ruben Amorim, to be totally honest,” Wright stated.
“We are now seeing a Manchester United youth product, who was not given the opportunity to play and came very close to leaving the club.”
Mainoo had reportedly considered a January transfer due to his lack of minutes.
However, he has now started all four league matches under Carrick, becoming a pivotal figure.
Former United striker Dimitar Berbatov echoed the praise, expressing his relief that Mainoo stayed at Old Trafford.
Berbatov highlighted the youngster’s intelligence and control, noting his constant scanning of the pitch and ability to dictate tempo.
With his future now secure at United, Mainoo’s rapid rise under Carrick’s guidance is proving a pointed critique of the decisions made during the previous regime.
