Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has weighed in on the challenges facing Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim, suggesting the Portuguese coach should make bold decisions to rebuild the squad.
Jamie Carragher Advises Amorim to Part Ways with Rashford and Fernandes
Alongside Marcus Rashford, Carragher believes club captain Bruno Fernandes could also be sold to raise funds for a transformative overhaul at Old Trafford.
Carragher’s remarks come amid growing speculation over United’s plans for the summer transfer window. Rashford, a United academy graduate, has struggled to recapture his best form, with just 11 goals in his last 48 Premier League appearances.
The 27-year-old has faced criticism for inconsistency and is reportedly valued at £40 million—a figure that reflects his dip in form over the past 18 months.
“There’s been too much noise around Rashford for years now,” Carragher wrote in The Telegraph.
“He was a promising talent, but at 27, he should be in his prime. Instead, he’s delivering subpar performances. United will never win the Premier League or Champions League with him as their leading man.”
Carragher didn’t stop there. He also highlighted Fernandes, the talismanic midfielder who has been one of United’s most reliable performers since joining in January 2020.
While praising Fernandes’ talent, Carragher questioned his discipline and suggested his sale could generate much-needed funds for Amorim’s transfer budget.
“Fernandes has been United’s standout player during tough times,” Carragher noted.
“But at 30, he might hold significant market value.
Despite his creativity, his lack of discipline—both with and without the ball—makes it harder for the team to stay compact. Amorim might have to make a tough call to bolster his resources.”
With United unlikely to spend big in January, Amorim faces the daunting task of reshaping a squad riddled with underperformance and imbalance.
Selling two of the club’s biggest names would be a controversial but potentially transformative step.
Whether Amorim takes Carragher’s advice remains to be seen, but the pressure to deliver results is mounting, and bold decisions could define United’s future under their new manager.
