Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho defended his celebrations following his team’s 2-1 win against Juventus yesterday. The Red Devils registered their biggest victory of this season so far by beating Juventus at their own backyard.

Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring for Juventus in the 65th minute and it seemed that Juve would win the match. However, things took a dramatic turn in the final few minutes of the match. Juan Mata scored an equaliser in the 86th minute before an own goal by Alex Sandro in the 89th minute won the match for Manchester United.

This is the third time in a row that Manchester United have won against Juve in their own backyard.

After the match, Mourinho celebrated by cupping his hands to his ears. This infuriated Juventus skipper Leonardo Bonucci and he confronted Mourinho.

Following the match, Mourinho insisted that he meant no offense by his celebration. He said, “That sign that I made is actually not an offence. I just wanted to hear if they’d [the fans] make comments again or not. Obviously when I work for a club like Manchester United, I need to forget my past, especially in the 90 minutes. It’s not that during the 90 minutes I keep thinking I was coach of Inter or Real Madrid or Chelsea. In those 90 minutes I represent Manchester United.

But they didn’t forget, the others didn’t forget that I was. Of course I do my job, and my job was to win against Juventus, and it is a great joy for me, because we have won against such a super squad, a super team. I’ve come here as a professional and I have a great respect for a fantastic team.”

This win against Juventus is a massive confidence boost for Manchester United and they badly need it as their next match is against Manchester City on Sunday.
