Joshua Zirkwee has become the second Manchester United player to decide his future lies away from Old Trafford, with the Dutch forward preparing to seek a move when the transfer window reopens.

Zirkwee Follows Casemiro Out of Old Trafford After Disappointing Spell

The 24-year-old arrived from Bologna 18 months ago in a £36million deal but has failed to establish himself in the first team.

He has started only four matches across all competitions this season, with his opportunities drying up completely under new manager Michael Carrick.

Zirkwee enjoyed a brief run in the side during November and December when injuries ruled out Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko.

However, he has not started since Ruben Amorim’s penultimate game in charge at the end of December, a match where he disappeared at half-time.

The forward considered his options in January following Amorim’s departure. But Carrick’s appointment put a stop to any potential business during the winter window.

His prospects have not improved under Carrick. Benjamin Sesko now leads the line as first-choice striker, while Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha offer more prolific options in deeper roles.

Bruno Fernandes has also returned to his preferred position behind the striker.

Zirkwee has scored nine goals in 69 appearances for United. A return to Italy now emerges as a possible destination.

His decision follows Casemiro’s confirmation that he will leave when his contract expires at the end of the season. The Brazilian midfielder becomes the first confirmed departure in what promises to be a significant clear-out.

Replacing Casemiro in midfield now becomes a top priority for United. Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson feature on the club’s list of targets.

Harry Maguire remains in contract talks with the club despite entering the final months of his deal.

However, Jadon Sancho will depart when his contract expires, while Marcus Rashford looks set to complete a permanent move to Barcelona after his loan spell.

Rasmus Hojlund also expects to join Napoli permanently if the Serie A side secure Champions League qualification. Zirkwee now looks certain to follow them through the exit door.
