Louis Saha has voiced concerns over Manchester United’s midfield pairing of Christian Eriksen and Kobbie Mainoo, suggesting they are failing to support captain Bruno Fernandes adequately.
The former striker believes that the lack of dynamism in the middle of the park is contributing to Manchester United’s early struggles this season.
While Fernandes’ individual performances have dipped, with no goals in his last 11 appearances, Saha argues that the tactical setup and the midfield duo’s positioning are key factors in his struggles.
Eriksen and Mainoo, though technically sound, are often too deep in midfield, leaving Fernandes isolated and unable to influence the game as effectively.
Saha pointed out that Fernandes thrives when he has better support, especially in the final third, and feels that United’s midfield balance is currently off.
He explained, “Eriksen and Mainoo are good on the ball, but they lack the necessary legs and are often too far from the forwards, which makes it harder for Bruno to receive the passes he needs.”
The pairing has been a regular feature for manager Erik ten Hag, but Saha believes their lack of intensity and poor positioning has left Fernandes exposed.
The 19-year-old Mainoo, despite his potential, is not offering enough defensive cover, while Eriksen, despite his creativity, is unable to provide the necessary presence in the middle of the park.
United’s midfield struggles have compounded their disappointing start to the season, and with Ten Hag’s future under scrutiny, it’s clear that the balance in midfield needs rethinking if Fernandes is to regain his best form.
