Former Manchester United striker Louis Saha feels the club made a grave mistake in not signing Bruno Fernandes this summer.

With the departures of Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera, the Red Devils were in dire need of signing midfielders this summer. Fernandes was touted as a top target for the club, with fans also pleading them to sign the playmaker on social media.

United, however, passed the chance to sign Fernandes as they felt he gave the possession away frequently. The Portuguese was in impressive form last season, notching 23 goals in the league for Sporting.

“Bruno Fernandes is a player of great technical quality who could be extremely decisive at various points in United’s game,” he said to Portuguese outlet Record.

“But more than that, he’s a born leader and that’s what Manchester United are missing this season.”

“He’s undoubtedly a huge player and his market value should not be impeding for a club like United. In addition, Sporting have the right to ask whatever they want for one of their most valuable assets.”

“Bruno Fernandes was absolutely impressive last season.”

“Only time can tell, but judging from everything that has happened – United made a mistake by not buying Bruno Fernandes and not signing a creative midfield player.”

United were also linked with a move for Christian Eriksen on the deadline day but a deal failed to materialise.
