According to Spanish rumours, Manchester United is thinking about making a deal for Cristian Romero, the captain of Tottenham. After criticising the club’s management earlier this season, the Argentina international looks certain to depart Spurs this summer. Last year, Atletico Madrid attempted to buy Romero but declined to pay Spurs’ asking price of €55 million (£47 million).
Marca claims that Atletico are thinking of making a new offer and have maintained their interest ahead of the summer transfer window. According to the article, Manchester United’s interest in the 27-year-old is a “major problem” for Atletico, but Real Madrid is also reportedly mulling a trade for Romero as they try to recruit a new central defender.
According to reports, Romero’s contract with Spurs contains a specific condition that would let him sign with Atletico, Real Madrid, or Barcelona this summer if a bid of €60 million (£51.9 million) is made. Diego Simeone expressed his admiration for the Tottenham captain before Atletico’s elimination of Spurs from the Champions League this month.
Man Utd want £60m Tottenham star
Harry Maguire may soon sign a new deal with United to stay at Old Trafford past this season, but Romero, a great player for Spurs, is also reportedly on United’s radar, according to Marca. Even while he might not be the Red Devils’ top target—at least not in terms of position—United sees a possible transfer window in the event that Tottenham is unimaginably down to the Championship in the upcoming weeks.
When Romero is playing at his best, there are no doubts about his skill; colleague Micky van de Ven has called him “world-class,” yet the Argentine does have flaws. Spurs have struggled with the 27-year-old’s discipline; since joining the team in 2021, their impetuous captain has been sent off six times, including twice this season.
His second dismissal for Tottenham in 2025–2026 resulted in a four-match suspension, which prevented him from playing in pivotal games during their fight to avoid relegation. In addition, there have been persistent reports that he wants to leave the north London club; Spurs great Chris Waddle recently stated that he “never really wanted” to be at Tottenham in the first place.
