Harry Maguire’s 2-1 victory over Liverpool could finally usher in the Ruben Amorim era, ending Manchester United’s arduous and protracted quest for an away victory. Shortly after Cody Gakpo had cancelled out Bryan Mbeumo’s rapid opening, Maguire headed home Bruno Fernandes’ looping cross in the 85th minute to give United the lead again.
Amorim had his first consecutive Premier League victories as the Red Devils’ manager, and it was United’s first victory at Anfield since January 2016. Following an aerial challenge that brought down Alexis Mac Allister, Mbeumo, and Virgil van Dijk, United took the lead at precisely 60 seconds courtesy of some lightning-fast reflexes.
Amad Diallo was sent off down the wing by Fernandes in space, and the Ivorian threaded a ball for Mbeumo, who got back up fast, to sprint in Giorgi Mamardashvili’s direction and knock him out.
It had been nine years since United had triumphed at Anfield. Under Amorim, they had never won the league twice in a row before. With a performance and outcome that promised better times, they drove the demons from their backs.
Manchester United end wait for Anfield win
Manchester United’s historic win is the first time under Ruben Amorim that they have won consecutive Premier League games. The champions are now only two points behind Liverpool in the standings and four points ahead of leaders Arsenal in third place.
“It means a lot today,” Man Utd manager Ruben Amorim told Sky Sports. However, it won’t matter anything tomorrow. Even though it’s only three points, the win is still fantastic. I’ll try to get the game back, just like I did in the previous several games.
“In key points we had some luck, but we fought for every ball.” In the second half, we lost our cool. What matters most, though, is that the spirit was present. “It is the start of everything.” You play more with the ball on certain days and less with it on others. However, you can win any game if you have the right attitude.
