Manchester United Weigh Thomas Tuchel as Potential Replacement for Erik ten Hag
Manchester United’s board is already eyeing Thomas Tuchel as a possible successor to Erik ten Hag amid mounting pressure on the Dutch manager.
With only three games into the new season and two defeats already on the record, Ten Hag’s future at Old Trafford appears increasingly precarious.
The recent setback against Liverpool has intensified scrutiny around Ten Hag.
Despite backing him heavily in the summer—securing several new signings and reshuffling his coaching team—the team’s performance remains lackluster, echoing some of last season’s issues.
The lack of a clear playing style and the recent string of poor results have put Ten Hag under the microscope once more.
As discussions about a potential managerial change swirl, Tuchel emerges as Manchester United’s preferred choice.
The German coach, who left Bayern Munich at the end of last season after a trophyless campaign, previously demonstrated his tactical prowess at Borussia Dortmund, PSG, and Chelsea. At Chelsea, Tuchel famously led the club to Champions League glory.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe had initial talks with Tuchel over the summer but ultimately chose to give Ten Hag more time. However, should the current struggles continue, Tuchel’s name is at the top of the list for a potential managerial switch.
On the other hand, Gareth Southgate, who recently stepped down as England manager, is not in contention.
Despite his success with the national team, Southgate is expected to take a break before considering club opportunities.
Ten Hag remains steadfast in his belief that he can turn things around. United CEO Omar Berrada has publicly backed him, stating,
“Erik has our full backing. We’re committed to working closely with him to achieve the best results.”
Nonetheless, the mounting pressure suggests that Tuchel could soon be more than just a contingency plan for Manchester United.
