Manchester United is getting closer to qualifying for the Champions League. Since their elimination in the group stage of the 2023–2024 season, the Red Devils have not participated in Europe’s top tournament. When Ruben Amorim was fired in early January, Manchester United veteran Michael Carrick assumed temporary leadership at Old Trafford.
The team moved from seventh to third place in the Premier League standings thanks to the renowned midfield player, who is a strong candidate for the position permanently. Carrick is certain to guide United back to the Champions League, but when will they be able to formally secure their spot in the tournament?
Champions League football is awarded to the top five players in the Premier League standings, just like it was last season. With 15 points remaining in the season, Manchester United is now at 58 points. A victory over the Bees would put the Red Devils on the verge of qualifying for their next game against Brentford.
If United wins on Monday, they will have 61 points, and if Brighton and Bournemouth lose this weekend, their place in Europe’s top league may be assured before they meet Liverpool on Sunday.
Man Utd need to secure Champions League qualification
Brighton can only get 62 points; therefore, United won’t have to worry about them after another victory. In a similar vein, two draws will be enough to put United 64 points ahead of their Premier League rivals.
If Carrick’s team can earn a point against the Seagulls on the last day of the season, they will be allowed to lose every game. Brighton will only be able to reach 60 points if the match ends in a draw, whereas United is already at 61.
Brighton, Nottingham Forest, Sunderland, and Liverpool remain United’s opponents. Brighton has to perform flawlessly when they travel to Newcastle, play Wolves at home, travel to Elland Road in Leeds, and then play United.
Carrick would have done all in his ability to extend his time in the Old Trafford dugout if he were to secure Champions League football. It remains to be seen if it will be adequate. Carrick feels that ownership should be tightly linked to people who work at United and has been eager to build relationships throughout the team.
