Manchester United have suffered a major transfer setback after reports from Portugal confirmed that Arsenal have won the race to sign Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres.

The Swedish forward, long linked with a move to Old Trafford, is now said to be “on his way” to the Emirates Stadium.
According to Portuguese outlet O Jogo, a £58.9 million agreement has been reached between Arsenal and Sporting for the 25-year-old, who just capped off a phenomenal season by firing his team to the Liga Portugal title.
The front page of the publication featured Gyokeres in celebration, with the bold headline confirming the Gunners have secured his signature.
United had earmarked Gyokeres as a key target since November, particularly due to his strong connection with Sporting boss Ruben Amorim, who has been heavily linked with the managerial role at Old Trafford.
With Rasmus Hojlund struggling for consistency and United in desperate need of a proven goalscorer, Gyokeres’ 43-goal haul across all competitions made him the perfect candidate to lead the line.
But while United were still weighing up a formal approach, Arsenal acted swiftly.
Mikel Arteta is reportedly a long-time admirer of the striker and made the move early to address the club’s long-standing need for a top-tier No.9.
The news comes as a blow to United fans hoping for a statement signing. With Gyokeres now seemingly out of reach, the Red Devils will turn their attention to alternative targets.
MEN Sport reports that Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap, who impressed with 12 Premier League goals despite the club’s relegation, is high on United’s radar.
Delap’s relatively modest £30m release clause makes him an attractive option.
