Robbie Savage urged United to sign three players to challenge Premier League title next season.
Manchester United have seven matches to play in the top-flight and are 11 points behind leaders Manchester City with a game in hand.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side has been linked with many players ahead of the summer window.
Former Wales international Robbie Savage wants United to sign a right midfielder, a defender and a striker to challenge for the title this season.
Savage told The Weekend Preview: “So if you play Fernandes as a 10, I think for United to go into that next level, when you’ve got McTominay who’s been brilliant by the way, I think they need a No 6 who can pass the ball forward and be creative.
“Fred’s done well but I just think in that area, for United to challenge, they need a No 9 if Cavani leaves – Cavani’s magnificent – a No 9, a No 6 and a centre-half. The spine of the team.
“I think if they can get those three players, especially a No 6 who can pass forward consistently, I think they’ve got a chance of competing for the title.”
