Manchester United are accelerating their efforts to sign West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes ahead of the summer transfer window.

Red Devils Accelerate Chase for £65 Million-Rated Fernandes

The Red Devils have been monitoring the 21-year-old closely and have already made initial contact with the Hammers regarding a potential deal.

According to SportsBoom, United scouts have been regular attendees at West Ham matches to track Fernandes’ progress.

They have specifically watched his performances against Liverpool, Fulham, and Bournemouth to assess his defensive discipline and playmaking abilities.

The club’s interest appears genuine, with sources confirming they approached West Ham during the last transfer window to lay the groundwork for a summer move.

United are planning a significant overhaul of their midfield department at the end of the campaign.

Brazilian anchorman Casemiro will leave on a free transfer when his contract expires in June, creating a major void in the defensive midfield position.

There could be further departures as well, with Manuel Ugarte reportedly frustrated with his bit-part role this season. The Uruguayan might push for an exit if his situation does not improve.

While securing a top-class defensive midfielder remains the priority, United view Fernandes as an ideal young recruit to bolster their options.

If they secure European football for the 2026/27 season, the extra workload will require greater squad depth.

Fernandes fits the profile perfectly as he can operate anywhere across the midfield, though he is most comfortable as a holding or central player.

The Portuguese star has impressed since Nuno Espirito Santo took charge at the London Stadium. He has accumulated eight goal contributions this season and boasts an impressive 88% pass completion rate in the Premier League.

Defensively, he averages six duels won, three tackles, and five recoveries per game, demonstrating the work rate United crave.

West Ham will not let their asset leave cheaply. The east London club expects offers between £56 million and £65 million for a summer sale. They would prefer to keep him for another year, hoping to raise his valuation to £86 million.

However, a major complication exists. West Ham currently sit in the relegation zone on goal difference. If they drop to the Championship, United could potentially prise Fernandes away for a significantly reduced fee.
