After leaving the team as a free agent four years ago, Angel Gomes is already planning to rejoin Manchester United in the future. Following his senior debut last weekend against the Republic of Ireland, the 24-year-old made an impression in England’s victory over Finland throughout the week. It follows an extended run of success with Lille in Ligue 1, which enabled Les Dogues to earn a spot in the Champions League for this year.
Gomes made his Manchester United debut at the age of sixteen, taking Wayne Rooney’s place in the starting lineup. This marked Gomes the club’s youngest debutant since Duncan Edwards in 1953. Gomes made his breakthrough with Manchester United. Though Gomes had only made 10 first-team appearances, optimism about the star’s future at the team faded, and in 2020, Gomes left on a free transfer.
Lille’s Angel Gomes targeting a return to Manchester United
Manchester Evening News reports that midfielder Angel Gomes of Lille has long-term plans to rejoin Manchester United. After being included in Lee Carsley’s first England squad as manager, the recently capped England international has garnered a lot of plaudits. When Gomes came on in the 88th minute against Crystal Palace in 2017, he was 16 years old and had just graduated from the Manchester United academy. Gomes had previously played for Wayne Rooney.
At Old Trafford, the 24-year-old’s expectations weren’t met, even though he became the youngest Red Devils player in 65 years. The 24-year-old Gomes is nearing the end of his Lille deal. Though it’s unclear if anyone would try to test Lille’s resolve in January instead of waiting to make a summer move, scouts from a number of clubs were present for England’s triumph over Finland, which marked his first senior start for the Three Lions.
