Usually, players are given a protective mask when they undergo a facial injury. For example, a broken nose needs to be protected at all costs so Cesar Azpilicueta of Chelsea is seen wearing blacked-out gear to cover their faces. It is only to prevent further injury.

Now, in a normal game like a Premier League one, plenty of Manchester United players have been photographed wearing these masks. Wayne Rooney, David De Gea, Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba.

Any sort of facial injury is dangerous for a player but it shouldn’t always restrict him taking part on the pitch. A broken nose, a scrape on the chin or even a swollen eye can be well protected with these masks.

Nemanja Matic is a Manchester United player but back when he was with Chelsea, he had put on this carbon fibre mask back in December 2015. The Serbian suffered a double fracture to his nose and cheek during a league match against Tottenham.

Ryan Giggs Mask

Back in November 2013, Manchester United players paid tribute to a club legend, Ryan Giggs turning 40 in a fitting manner. All the players sported a mask with the Welshman’s face before the weekend game against Tottenham Hotspur.

David Moyes’ men also plastered pictures of Giggs at various stages in his career at the Carrington training facility – on the changing room walls, some images from when he was much younger, even suggesting that he would have fit perfectly in a boy band.

At the time, Giggs had just recorded his 953rd senior appearance for United in a 5-0 Champions League rout of Bayer Leverkusen. Next week’s opposition number, Tottenham and their boss, was definitely throwing down a sweat, since it was the White Hart Lane where he scored his first Premier League goal on September 19, 1992.
