Manchester United ace intends to be part of club's future

The player was recently linked with a move away

Chris Smalling joined Manchester United from Fulham for an undisclosed fee in 2010. He has won two Premier League title, the FA Cup, EFL Cup and the Europa League since being snapped up by Sir Alex Ferguson.

The England International featured regularly for the Red Devils last season, making 34 appearances in all competitions. He helped the team to finish 2nd in the league behind Manchester City, their highest league finish since they won the Premier League back in 2013.

The 28 year old is currently one of five first-team centre-backs currently on the books at the club. Despite being a mainstay in the defense for the past few years, he has often being criticized for being inconsistent.

The cente-back’s indifferent form last term costed him a place in the England World Cup squad and there were speculations that he could lose the starting berth in the upcoming season.

Jose Mourinho has prioritized signing a new defender in this transfer window and has been linked with a move for Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire and Yerry Mina. The Premier League giants are looking to land a proven performer who can slot straight into the Old Trafford fold.

There were speculations that Premier League new boys Wolves are interested in signing him and could lure him as they can guarantee a starting berth.

But Smalling intends to be a part of United’s future despite the club targeting other centre-backs.

He told MUTV: “It does feel like I’ve been here quite a few years but it doesn’t feel that many.

“It’s crazy, if you sit down and think about where it all started and certain games and how the process has gone, it’s pretty crazy.

“I’m just relishing living in this moment and, hopefully, I can look back and be very satisfied [in years to come].

“Hopefully, there’s lots more to come, but it’s nice to have a contribution and to be here for quite a while, helping the team and the managers that have come.

“I just try to do my best and try to be a part of the team. That’s something I’ve really felt at this club.”

“I think it [the start of the season] does come round very quickly. But that’s Manchester United,” added Smalling.

“We’re often the most talked about, and why not let us set the tone for the season and hopefully just get that win and set a marker?”
