Manchester United are accelerating their pursuit of West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes and hope to secure a full transfer agreement soon.

The Red Devils have already agreed personal terms with the 21-year-old Portuguese star and are now working to finalise a fee with the Hammers.
United have made central midfield their priority this summer. They have already struck a £38 million deal with Atalanta for Brazilian midfielder Ederson, though that transfer will only be completed after his involvement in the 2026 World Cup.
Manager Michael Carrick wants at least two new midfielders to add depth to his squad, and Fernandes fits that plan perfectly.
West Ham signed Fernandes from Southampton last summer for £38 million plus add-ons. However, the Hammers suffered relegation from the Premier League this season—the second consecutive relegation for the young midfielder, who went down with Southampton the previous year.
Despite those setbacks, Fernandes remains highly rated. West Ham value him at around £80 million and hoped to double their money on the player they signed just 12 months ago.
United, however, are unwilling to meet that valuation. According to reports, the Old Trafford club are proposing a deal worth £65 million upfront, with additional add-ons that could take the total package towards the £80 million mark.
Football Insider suggests United are hopeful of completing the transfer for that reduced figure.
Tottenham Hotspur have also shown strong interest in Fernandes this summer, but United appear to have stolen a march on their rivals.
The player is believed to be keen on the move to Old Trafford, and with personal terms already agreed, the main obstacle remaining is the fee between the two clubs.
United’s summer business reflects Carrick’s determination to reshape his midfield options. The club are also willing to listen to offers for Manuel Ugarte, which could pave the way for a third midfield arrival if Fernandes and Ederson both join.
With Fernandes described as “clearly a special talent” and attracting interest from multiple Premier League sides, United are moving quickly to get this deal over the line.
If they can agree a fee with West Ham in the coming days, the Portuguese international will become the second major signing of what promises to be a busy summer at Old Trafford.
