Manchester United are reportedly weighing up a January swoop for Malmo’s promising goalkeeper Melker Ellborg, as per Swedish outlet Expressen.

United Eye Rising Star: Melker Ellborg on Old Trafford’s Radar

The Red Devils strengthened their goalkeeping options last summer by signing Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp.

After a patient start, Lammens made his debut in October and has since established himself as United’s first-choice stopper in the Premier League.

However, the club’s recruitment team is said to be planning for the future by targeting Ellborg, a young and talented Swedish keeper who has impressed in the Allsvenskan this year.

The 22-year-old only made his senior debut for Malmo earlier in 2025 but has already clocked up 14 appearances across all competitions, drawing attention from several European clubs.

Ellborg’s potential arrival could also be linked to the uncertain future of Altay Bayindir.

The Turkish international began the campaign as Erik ten Hag’s first-choice goalkeeper but struggled to convince with his performances.

Following a string of unconvincing displays, he lost his place to Lammens and is now reportedly considering a January exit in search of regular playing time ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

If Bayindir leaves, United could look to bring in Ellborg as a young deputy to Lammens.

The Malmo shot-stopper has been in excellent form, keeping five clean sheets in seven league games and boasting an 83% save rate.

His distribution and command of the box have also drawn praise, with the Swede completing 75% of his passes and averaging seven recoveries per match.

Ellborg’s composure and modern style of play make him an attractive option for United, who could reportedly secure his signature for as little as £2–3 million, despite his current £265,000 market valuation.

If the move materialises, it would underline United’s commitment to building a young and competitive goalkeeping department for the future.
