According to the Evening Standard, Manchester United are interested in signing Real Madrid star Raphael Varane even though their chances of signing Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly are higher.

Manchester United are looking to fortify their defence by signing a quality centre-back. They were interested in signing Koulibaly but Napoli rejected two massive bids from the club. However, they still haven’t given up on signing Koulibaly.

Nevertheless, United are still keeping other options open provided they fail to sign Koulibaly. They were previously interested in signing the likes of toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire, Milan Skriniar, and Alessandro Romagnoli, all of whom still remain potential targets for the club.

Now, Manchester United are eyeing a move for Raphael Varane. One of the best defenders in the world at present, Varane has been an integral player for Real Madrid in the past few years. Hence, Los Blancos certainly won’t let him go that easy. Varane’s current contract at Real Madrid runs out in 2022.

Provided Manchester United do manage to somehow sign Varane, there is no doubt that the transfer fee will be a new world record fee for a defender.
