Eric Cantona was already a formidable household name after leading the Red Devils to back to back Premier League titles. Palace defender Richard Shaw had the task to nullify the French forward and the two got involved in a series of fights in the first half.

Just a couple of minutes into the second half Cantona unleashed a rough kick in his retaliation. The referee didn’t waste time and gave him the marching order. While walking off the pitch towards the tunnel a palace supporter said something untoward and Cantona launched Kung-fu kick.

The French man was suspended by United for the remaining part of the season while Football Association banned him till October from all football related activities.

2. Manchester United Vs Newcastle United 1998:

It was expected to be a cakewalk for Manchester United in the 1997-98 season as the Red Devils dominated the Premier League for the first six months.

But a severe dip in the form lost the plot and United started to fal apart. Newcastle came to visit Alex Ferguson’s team at the Old Trafford and the score was tied at 1-1 after David beckham equalised for the home side.

I the dying moment the Magpies broke on a dangerous counter and Rob Lee was certain to score the winning goal. But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer launched a devastating run covering a huge amount of ground and went on to foul Lee to break up the play.

Whenever Manchester United take on Liverpool tempers would definitely flare. Nemanja Vidic will go down as one of the best defenders of the Premier League who was known for his no-nonsense tackles.

Another high octane game. After three years without the title, United were expected to ramp up the intensity and visited Anfield anticipating a tough challenge from Liverpool.

The home side pressed hard from the first whistle and it had seemed the Red Devils would crumble like a pack of cards. Paul Scholes eventually gave up and raised his arm towards Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso.

Scholes was branded a straight red card although it proved to be a blessing in disguise as United went on to win the game in the dying minutes as John O’Shea perhaps netted the most important winners of his career.
