Manchester United are exploring a potential move for Freiburg forward Igor Matanović as manager Michael Carrick looks to bolster his attacking options ahead of the new season.

The 23-year-old Croatian enjoyed an impressive campaign in the Bundesliga, netting 15 goals for Freiburg last season.
His physical presence, standing at 6ft 4in, offers a similar profile to United’s current first-choice centre-forward Benjamin Sesko, and club sources have confirmed that internal discussions regarding Matanović have already taken place.
United’s interest in the Croatian largely hinges on the future of Joshua Zirkzee.
The Dutch striker remains at Old Trafford for now and featured in United’s 1-1 pre-season friendly draw with Leeds, where he found the net and reminded Carrick of his value. However, his long-term future is far from certain.
Juventus have been actively pursuing Zirkzee and have reportedly held advanced talks over a loan deal that would include a £30 million purchase option.
Should the Italian giants succeed in luring the Dutchman back to Serie A, United would need to reinforce their forward line to avoid placing excessive reliance on Sesko.
Matanović has emerged as a logical candidate. His mobility and finishing ability in Germany suggest considerable room for development, and he could provide genuine competition without demanding an automatic starting role.
However, United are not alone in their admiration. Tottenham Hotspur are also monitoring the player, which could force the Red Devils to act sooner than they might prefer.
Despite the external pressure, United are adopting a measured approach. Carrick and his recruitment team recognise that signing another young striker while both Sesko and Zirkzee remain at the club could create unnecessary congestion rather than solve a clear weakness.
The smartest course of action appears straightforward: keep the dialogue with Matanovic’s representatives alive while Zirkzee’s situation resolves itself.
If the Dutchman departs, United will have a ready-made replacement who can compete with Sesko and add valuable depth to the squad.
