The Red Devils, who sit nine points adrift of the top four in the Premier League, have scored just 21 goals in 17 games—a statistic that has raised concerns among fans and management alike.
United manager Ruben Amorim is said to be dissatisfied with his current attacking options, despite recent contributions from Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee.
While Hojlund has managed five goals since the last international break, and Zirkzee has added three, the club’s output remains far from the level needed to secure Champions League football.
Amid these concerns, Sky Switzerland journalist Sacha Tavolieri has revealed that United are in preliminary discussions with Osimhen’s camp about a potential move in January.
The 25-year-old Nigerian forward, currently on loan at Galatasaray, has been in scintillating form, scoring 12 goals and providing five assists in 15 appearances this season.
While agreeing personal terms with Osimhen is expected to be straightforward, Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis is reportedly holding firm on the player’s £62 million release clause.
This poses a significant hurdle for United, who may need to offload players to fund such a high-profile acquisition.
The situation is further complicated by Marcus Rashford’s uncertain future. The England international has fallen out of favor under Amorim and has been benched in the last three matches for “selection” reasons.
Rashford has hinted at seeking a new challenge, but his reduced playing time and desire to leave may impact United’s ability to command a substantial transfer fee.
Osimhen’s arrival could undoubtedly provide a much-needed boost to United’s attack. The forward, described as “world-class” by Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho, boasts a lethal combination of pace, power, and precision.
However, with financial constraints and Napoli’s firm stance, a winter move seems unlikely.
For now, United’s hierarchy may prioritize reinforcing other areas, such as left wing-back, while keeping their sights set on a marquee summer signing to bolster the squad.
