Manchester United lining up a move for Joao Cancelo

The right-back spent the 2017-2018 campaign on loan at Inter Milan

Manchester United are looking to bolster their squad this transfer window after an underwhelming campaign this season, not winning a single silverware. Their priority is to add defensive reinforcements as the club will also sell few players to accommodate new signings.

Despite having the most clean sheets and the second best defensive record in the Premier League, Jose Mourinho is not happy as he had to rely on auxiliary full-backs Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia.

Matteo Darmian, Daley Blind and Luke Shaw all likely to leave the club this summer after failing to establish themselves under Mourinho. The manager wants to sign a new right-back to provide competition to Valencia.

The Red Devils will seek to bolster their full-back options this summer with a £30 million move for Valencia’s Joao Cancelo, claims The Mirror.

Cancelo joined Inter Milan from the La Liga giants last summer on a 1 year loan deal until 30 June 2018. The deal was part of a loan exchange  with Geoffrey Kondogbia moving in the other direction.

The Portugal International has enjoyed an impressive season in Italy, scoring 1 goal and assisting 3 in 28 appearances in all competitions. He also helped his team to finish 4th in the league, securing Champions League for the next season.

Nerazzurri have the option to make the the 23 year old a permanent fixture at San Siro buy yet to make a decision. Club’s boss Luciano Spalletti has admitted that signing the player on a permanent basis may not happen.

“Football has changed. Before they gave you a penalty and you couldn’t go back on that decision, just like before you could spend what you wanted,” Spalletti said. “Now we have to keep in line with the settlement agreement signed by the previous owners, having inherited it we must keep to its criteria and requirements. Once that’s done we can reinvest, but it’s difficult to get big names, like last year.

“That isn’t to say they can’t be signed, but everything depends on what we can come up with. Right now Rafinha and Cancelo can’t be signed outright, even if they did very well for Inter. We’ll see later, but right now we can’t.”

This has alerted Manchester United and they are looking at the possibility to sign him Cancelo this summer.
