5. Henrikh Mkhitaryan – Most Expensive Manchester United Departures

Mkhitaryan is one of the most aggressive and resolute midfielders to have ever played in the Premier League. He joined the Red Devils in the summer of 2016 and was the first Armenian to play in the English top-flight.
He spent two seasons with the Red Devils, during which he won the Europa League and Carabao Cup under manager Jose Mourinho. He struggled to make an impression and was moved to Arsenal in a swap deal with Alexis Sanchez in 2018.
“At the beginning, we had some difficulties,” Mkhitaryan told the BBC in February 2017. “It’s not very easy because you know when you have a new manager you have to try to adapt yourself to him, to the team, to the training session, to the game.”

4. David Beckham
By now, we are all aware of the controversy that took place at Manchester United between David Beckham and then-manager, Sir Alex Ferguson. An instrumental part of the class of ’92, Beckham was Old Trafford’s golden boy and also the very face of the football club back in his United days.
The midfielder was making headway as a professional but in the early 2000s his relationship with Ferguson started to deteriorate. By the age of 25-26, Beckham was a global superstar, who was not just a footballer but a fashion icon as well. His commitments away from the sport was feeding into the manager’s distrust in him until a huge dressing room bust-up seemingly cut all ties.
After a FA Cup loss against Arsenal, Ferguson in a fit of rage threw a boot at Beckham which ended up hurting the midfielder. He struggled to win a place in the United first-team and was subsequently sold off to Real Madrid for around €37m.

3. Angel Di Maria
Angel Di Maria was ranked as one of Europe’s top wingers during his time at Real Madrid and his price tag of £60m justified that statement. It looked like a giant coup by Manchester United during the Argentine’s early days as he assisted and scored on a regular basis.
However, pretty soon his form dipped owing to Louis van Gaal’s outdated playing style and a few of the player’s issues away from football. After one season, he refused to travel for pre-season and was then sold off to Paris Saint-Germain for a little bit of loss.
He is 3th in the list for Manchester United Most Expensive Players Sold.
2. Romelu Lukaku
He was sold last summer after it was decided that Lukaku was surplus to requirements in Old Trafford. Since the arrival of Ole, Lukaku had been sidelined with Martial and Rashford getting all the starts. Despite Big Rom’s heroics to win at Paris, he was shunned away by the confused United boss.
He stuck with Martial and decided to sell Rom who has now scored 17 goals for Inter already in a matter of months and is looking like a world class striker.
United surely got big money for him but with the Red Devils struggling now, was it worth it?
He is 2nd in the list for Manchester United Most Expensive Players Sold.
1. Cristiano Ronaldo
Cristiano Ronaldo was already the world’s best player at Manchester United, having won the Balon d’Or, three Premier League titles, one FA Cup and a Champions League trophy. But there was the distinctive threat of a younger Lionel Messi claiming that throne as the Argentine beat out United in the Champions League final, in Ronaldo’s final season with the Red Devils.
His ambitions knew no bounds and Sir Alex Ferguson had to resort to letting him go. In the summer of 2009, Ronaldo secured a glorious move to Real Madrid for almost €100m, completely obliterating the world transfer record. He still holds the record of being the most expensive Manchester United departure. The one player, who seems most likely to beat the Portuguese’s price tag from a decade back might be Paul Pogba.
He is 1st name in the list for Manchester United Most Expensive Players Sold.
